I hope your summer is off to a great start. It’s definitely going to be a different kind of summer given the landscape of the pandemic. A good reason to make sure our bodies are fueled with proper nutritious foods and that we correct any nutrient depletions we may be experiencing.

I get a lot of questions about magnesium, it’s such a powerful mineral in the body and one that unfortunately is depleted in our soil with modern farming practices. This post was written by Dr. Kristina Burban, PharmD who was an intern with us in April from cupharm We will be sharing part 2 later this week where we will discuss various forms of magnesium.

Another edition of #thriving in a pandemic.. and honestly keys to thriving always....One key for me is studying the word and being consistent in #prayer and the second is being in #community.

For the first, my goal is to spend time in the word each day, but if I’m being honest that doesn’t always happen. I have to remind myself that sometimes meditating even a few verses of #scripture as I drive and spending time with Lord in prayer is equally important as spending thirty minutes diving into scripture and deciphering what the text meant to the people it was written to then and what it means for me today. All of this has been key to my spiritual growth, some days look different then others.

Community, you can’t do this alone, God didn’t call us to do it alone, that is the purpose of the church, our body of believers. Throughout my life, even from some of the people closest to me, I’ve heard “I believe in God, but I don’t believe in organized church.” This is not how we were designed by our creator. We need to be in community, to learn from one another, to care for one another, to rebuke and correct one another. The greatest moments and the hardest moments in my life I’ve been surrounded by God’s people. Corporate worship is essential to return to someday, but the largest growth in my life has been in small groups.

The last few months I had the pleasure of studying the word and this book with ladies in my neighborhood. Such a blessing to have been placed here by the Lord. ( we really tried and tried for months to buy a different house.. story for another day!) but seeing the why of us being here instead and the community here has been a huge blessing.

Find your community... it may be on zoom right now and as it warms up it may be in your driveway or backyard but engage with the people around you. It will never be a bad thing. It may be with your #kids and being interrupted a bazillion times but it’s worth it. “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” #Hebrews 10:24-25.

Super easy baked veggie frittata!

Sauté any veggies ...here I used mushrooms, broccoli, and spinach with some garlic and olive oil. Place in oiled baking dish. Add sundried tomatoes, then pour eggs over top. I added a bit of Parmesan cheese mixed in the eggs. (This is a dozen eggs in a 8x11 pan) Bake at 350 for 20-25 minutes.

This is heading to k.a.r.i.s.s.a.k for dinner tomorrow with ambitiouskitchen ‘s Thai quinoa coleslaw to nourish momma and welcome baby boy!

Happy Mother’s Day to all my fellow mommas out there!🤱Especially to my momma, grandma, and mother-in-law!

I am thankful for these two kiddos that bring me so much joy. The road hasn’t always been easy, but it’s brought so much growth. I’m thankful for all the hours spent learning about gut healing and hormones, and all the other practitioners that guided me along the way which helped me be a momma and support my kiddos and their health. 👩‍👧‍👦 I remember sitting at one providers office and her looking at my hormone levels and she said, “you aren’t fixing this without Accupunture.” Add in some chaste tree and lots of prayer and here we are 4 years after that encounter with a little man that keeps us on our toes.

Was baking three types of muffins on anyone else’s agenda today? 🙋‍♀️ My kids decided they each needed their own recipe to make. They are pictured in my stories.

All are yummy but the flourless chocolate peanut butter muffins from happyhealthymama are the winner! I’ve also made them low carb before by using stevia in place of maple syrup just requires a little more oil.

Thriving through the pandemic part 3.. Rest.. Rest is something I’m not very good at generally. As an extrovert with the spiritual gift of hospitality I’m often running in different directions or planning the next event. I love a bazillion different things practicing pharmacy/functional medicine, teaching, learning, networking, and spending time engaging my community. Anyone else with me?

But right now many of us who have children, have been called to be essential workers + grade school teachers and childcare providers in addition to our normal tasks. Whether those tasks are launching a new arm of a business or keeping the house tidy and organized. It all takes time and rest is essential. Stay at Home Parents too.. your job got a lot harder as well because your support team disappeared overnight.

You can’t pour from an empty cup and without time to rest we can’t hear the Lord or recognize our own needs for that matter. This week I canceled a few evening zoom obligations and went to bed early last night, I even woke up before my alarm at 5:45 am ready to go! I’m pretty sure that hasn’t happened in awhile. I’m behind on a few commitments and classes I’m in right now, but this was important.

I’m also trying to spend more time just sitting and praying, (maybe multi-tasking in the sauna 😉) or even just resting my mind by turning off the podcast or audio book while driving.

Thriving during the pandemic continued!

I talked about how important community is even though we are isolated on my FB live Thursday but a recap ...Find your tribe that you text and call frequently, engage your church family via zoom, talk to your neighbors with social distance, and keep up with family with technology too. It may be silly but my 6 year old has had play dates over zoom and they play dolls just like if they were here in person, it’s precious. Don’t do this alone, if you are naturally inclined to bottle up emotions find that person or people you can share with... mental health is so important.

Let’s reach out to our tribe and make sure they are ok too! “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” Hebrews 10:24-25

God is still in control and I think on the other side of this, the value of friendship and community will be at a new level in our lives.

This week we are going to talk about thriving! I want us to learn from one another about how we grow and improve during this time of uncertainty! I so often hear “oh we are just surviving,” which on many levels can be true but what does that say about our heart right now? We don’t know how long it will take to go back to “normal” and frankly I don’t know if I ever want to be that “busy” again. I want to grow and cherish this time with family while supporting the needs of those around me.

So today let’s talk about exercise! I haven’t always been able to stick to a routine as much as I have tried. Week to week my schedule isn’t always the same and the days I work I start seeing patients at 7:15 am so working out before work is a no-go for me. So with extra days at home my new goal is to do a workout 🏋️‍♀️ the 4 days a week that I am not I’m the clinic and walk for 30 min the days I’m working.
With the nice weather ☀️ my resident poshpharmacist and I have taken a few laps around the nursing home property next door at lunch and I’ve walked with my family in the evening!

I also am loving barreblendworkout from beachbody (no I don’t sell this) but it’s the first workout that I don’t feel like I can’t move the next day and can still build and tone muscle! Also try to get a HIT spin bike session in at least 1x per week.

Three of my patients I encountered this week that had recent D levels drawn, they were 6, 10, and 23 ng/ml. And the person with a 10 was already taking 50,000 IU/week with seemingly no other reason to have absorption issues. Vitamin D Deficiency is rampant amongst our society and is often higher in our chronic disease population.

Obviously a lot of patients we aren't sending to the lab to check Vitamin D levels during this time. I'm recommending at least 5,000 IU per day for adults and 2,000IU for most kids empirically if we don't have labs. I also like to pair it with K2--> see the blog for more info on that!) Could we get back to work & school with a better assessment and testing protocol surrounding Vitamin D and nutrient status?

Wow there are a lot of new faces around here in the last 2 days!  It took me a minute but then I realized it was because of the lindseyelmoreshow contest!  Thank you so much lindseyelmore for following me and being such a great friend, mentor, and supporter!  And congrats on your podcast launch! Find it in iTunes!

I wanted to re-introduce myself..I go by Melody, Dr. Hartzler, or Mom depending on what day or time of day it is.  I’m a Pharmacist, but at my core I’m a teacher, I teach my patients, students, followers, and other professionals about diabetes and functional medicine. I wear lots of hats as a professional, but I love the diversity of what I get to do and wouldn’t trade it for anything.

If you are new to functional medicine, I like to call it root-cause medicine. Our goal is to get to the root cause and address chronic disease with nutrition, lifestyle, and sometimes nutrient supplementation.  I won’t ever say pharmaceutical medications aren’t needed. I do prescribe them in my collaborative practice, they are part of my tool kit. But I’m going to be your biggest cheerleader to reverse chronic disease with nutrition and lifestyle as much as possible first!

Normally I listen to podcasts either sermons or functional medicine related on the way to work. Today I listened to kloveradio. One of my favorite songs from christomlin was on... made me cry thinking about our big cities that are struggling right now. “You're the God of this city
