Dr. Cates’ areas of focus include gut health, mental health, nutritional deficiencies, women’s health, and medication optimization. She is passionate about medication safety and ensuring that if medication is used it is the lowest most effective dose. After improving her own health through functional testing and gut healing she became motivated to share what she has learned with others. Her goal is to meet people where they are with their health and help them to identify root causes of symptoms so they can not only survive but thrive!
Dr. Cates became passionate about functional medicine after seeing some of the limitations of a medication only approach to health and learning there are many approaches to healing that involve identifying root causes of illness. She is a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist (BCPS) and Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner (CFMP). She owns Cultivate Health & Wellness with a focus on gut health and loves partnering with people on their healing journey. Dr. Cates offers virtual appointments and has availability for face to face visits in Marion, Indiana.
Angela is a 2005 graduate of the Purdue University School of Pharmacy. She has experience in hospital pharmacy, ambulatory care, long-term care, and functional medicine consulting. She has served as Adjunct Faculty at Indiana Wesleyan University and Butler University. She completed her functional medicine training through Functional Medicine University.
Angela lives on a farm in rural Indiana with her husband and two children, and in her spare time she enjoys spending time in the great outdoors, traveling, and cheering on her children. She loves reading and considers herself a life-long learner.
Her personal functional medicine journey began with her own health, through healing inflammation in her gut and identifying food sensitivities, she was able to taper off of medication for acid reflux and reduce headaches. Her son also struggled with severe anxiety, ADHD, and gastrointestinal issues despite multiple medical interventions. It was not until we pursued a functional medicine approach to heal his gut imbalances, and address nutritional deficiencies and food sensitivities, that we are able to see meaningful improvement.
