More anxiety lately… more irritable… suddenly wide awake at 2 a.m., you’re not imagining it. In perimenopause, one of the first hormones to shift is progesterone. Progesterone is the hormone that helps you feel calmer, sleep better, and keeps estrogen in check. And when you’re not ovulating as regularly, that steady rise in progesterone doesn’t always happen anymore. That’s when things can start to feel off. Estrogen may still be hanging around, doing its thing, but without enough progesterone to balance it, you might notice heavier or longer cycles, more mood swings, and sleep that just isn’t as restful as it used to be. This is why progesterone is often one of the first places we look with patients. Sometimes support can be as simple as herbs. Other times, bioidentical oral progesterone can be really helpful, especially for sleep and anxiety, because of how it works on calming pathways in the brain.
