Dr. Nicole Slater is a residency-trained ambulatory care pharmacist, associate clinical professor of pharmacy practice, certified functional medicine specialist, and a best-selling author. Dr. Slater is passionate about helping patients uncover the root cause of and prevent chronic disease using nutrition and personalized medicine so that they are able to thrive in areas of life that matter to them most.
Dr. Slater’s areas of focus include diabetes, weight loss, metabolic disorders, gut health, nutritional deficiencies, and autoimmune diseases including psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis.
Dr. Slater’s personal encounter with her own health transformation through Functional Medicine has inspired her to pursue her true calling of empowering others to reach their health goals by using food to heal and promote an overall sense of well-being. Dr. Nicole has helped many clients transform their health by getting to the root cause of their condition and sharing realistic strategies to overcome chronic fatigue, promote weight loss, improve GI discomfort, and regulate blood sugar for a happier and healthier you!
Dr. Nicole Slater graduated from the Bernard J Dunn School of Pharmacy in 2012. She completed a post-graduate ASHP accredited ambulatory care residency program in 2013 and went on to complete a fellowship in academia and ambulatory care in 2014. She then started her career as an assistant clinical professor at the Harrison School of Pharmacy at Auburn University and lived in Mobile, Alabama for nearly 8 years. After the birth of her first child, Nicole and her family moved to Virginia to be closer to friends and family and now serves as an associate clinical professor at the Bernard J Dunn School of Pharmacy, at Shenandoah University.
Dr. Slater is also a Certified Functional Medicine Specialist™ from STORRIE Institute™ a board-certified ambulatory care pharmacist, and serves as a clinical pharmacist as well as a Certified Omnipod insulin pump trainer. Dr. Slater teaches an elective in functional medicine and has been invited to speak at various events to demonstrate how pharmacists can engage in the functional medicine space. Dr. Slater has helped clients overcome their struggles with chronic disease, weight loss, and insulin resistance through her functional medicine practice. She has helped them reduce inflammation by using food as medicine to heal the gut and promote optimal health and well-being.
Dr. Slater is on a mission to teach our future healthcare professionals about Functional Medicine and help patients understand that their diseases do not define them. There is always another way; sometimes, you just have to commit to yourself and rediscover options for an optimal transformation.
Nicole is originally from central Pennsylvania where the majority of her family still resides today. She married her husband Drew in January 2020, and they have two beautiful daughters, Ruby (2 going on 22!) and Emerson (4 months). Nicole now lives in Northern Virginia and she and her family enjoy going to the beach and exploring new places together. Nicole is also into baking and has her own following on instagram @nslatecakes. Nicole found functional medicine about 6 years ago when she was struggling with her own mysterious health problems and has been committed to healing herself, keeping her family healthy, and educating everyone else about the power of functional medicine!
